Tour Description
Embark on an exhilarating adventure today as we delve into the stunning natural beauty of Conguillío National Park, nestled in the heart of Araucanía.
We will depart from the hotel in Pucón early in the morning at the scheduled time, setting our course towards Melipeuco, located approximately 124 km away. Our journey leads us to one of the region's most significant destinations, the Conguillío National Park.
Established initially as a Forest Reserve in 1950, Conguillío achieved National Park status in 1970. In 1987, it merged with Paraguas Park due to their shared ecological and geographical features, now covering an expansive area of 60,833 hectares.
The park is renowned for its vast forest areas, dominated by the majestic araucaria trees and complemented by lagoons with pristine, crystal-clear waters. Positioned in the Andes between 700 and 2,500 meters above sea level, this park offers one of nature's most breathtaking displays, enhanced by spectacular panoramic views.
Within the park, there are 13 well-marked trails, featuring main attractions such as the Llaima Volcano, and the Verde, Arco Iris, Captrén, and Quepe Lagoons, as well as Lake Conguillío. This lake, situated at the base of the Sierra Nevada, is surrounded by lush native vegetation and towering Araucaria trees, along with Coigüe, Lenga, and Cypress forests.
Additionally, within the park, you'll discover the Trucha Linda Falls, Truful-Truful Falls, Sierra Nevada, Cerro La Cruz, and the Llaima Volcano ski resort.
This entire area was once home to the indigenous Pehuenche community, a heritage reflected in the artifacts found here and the indigenous names of various sites and geographical features.
We will explore six principal hiking trails during our tour. "Sierra Nevada" offers spectacular views of Lake Conguillío, the Llaima Volcano, and nearby glaciers. "Los Carpinteros" leads you through Araucaria and Lenga forests and to the Captrén Lagoon, teeming with birdlife.
We'll also traverse "Las Araucarias" and "Las Vertientes," both extending for 800 meters. These trails cross several watercourses originating underground. Another highlight is the "Cañadón del Truful-Truful" trail, which unveils the region's intriguing geological history. The "Cerro Colorado" trail traces the western slope of the Llaima Volcano, offering vistas of the central valley and surrounding slag heaps.
During our journey, we'll pause at a scenic spot to savor a delightful box lunch, recharging our energy before continuing to our next destination.
As we trek, we'll encounter a variety of local and endemic wildlife, including the puma, guiña, black woodpecker, brown-striped lizard, Darwin's frog, freshwater shark, and the mountain monkey—the world's smallest marsupial—as well as the condor, harrier, and numerous aquatic birds visible from the lagoons.
Throughout the hike, we'll witness the distinct lava flows of the Llaima Volcano, which ascend to approximately 3,125 meters above sea level. This remarkable site is sure to captivate everyone with its rare lava formations, seldom seen elsewhere.
After a day filled with adventure in Conguillío National Park, we will retrace our steps back to our starting point.
This journey will leave us with a profound sense of fulfillment after exploring this natural haven.
