Frequently Asked Questions

The Circuito O in Torres del Paine is a demanding trek, ideal for travelers in good physical condition with prior experience in multi-day hikes. It covers approximately 110–120 km over 8 days, with stages lasting 6 to 10 hours and sections with significant elevation changes, especially at the John Gardner Pass and on the day at Torres Base Camp. The terrain is uneven, with mud, roots, suspension bridges, and strong winds typical of Patagonia. Cardiovascular and leg strength training is recommended, as well as carrying an 8–12 kg backpack and having basic mountain self-sufficiency. It is not advisable for absolute beginners.

A self-guided trekking package in Torres del Paine typically includes reservations at refuges or campsites, a pre-trek briefing, maps or a GPS app with tracks, 24/7 telephone support, and, in many cases, regular transfers from Puerto Natales to the park and back. Full board (breakfast, dinner, and packed lunch) may also be offered as an extra. Airfare, personal equipment (boots, sleeping bag, sleeping mat, trekking poles, or tent if camping), travel insurance, tips, and the national park entrance fee (paid separately, preferably online) are not usually included. Verify the final details of inclusions, change policies, and high-season surcharges with the tour operator.

The best time to hike the O Circuit is from October to April, with the most stable conditions between November and March. Spring and summer in Patagonia offer long days and better conditions, but also strong winds (frequent gusts of 30–80 km/h), rain, and sudden temperature changes. Snow is possible at higher altitudes, even in summer. During the shoulder season (October to April), there are fewer people, but a higher probability of cold weather. Winter access is restricted. Book well in advance (3–6 months) as shelters and campsites fill up quickly. Bring waterproof and windproof layering, sun protection, and be prepared for four seasons in a single day.

The itinerary may vary depending on the availability of refuges/campsites, but it is usually as follows: Day 1 Torres/Serón; Day 2 Serón–Dickson; Day 3 Dickson–Los Perros; Day 4 Los Perros–John Gardner Pass–Grey Glacier; Day 5 Grey Glacier–Paine Grande; Day 6 Paine Grande–French Valley–Cuernos/Italiano sector; Day 7 Cuernos/Chileno Glacier–Central Glacier; Day 8 Ascent to the Torres Glacier Base Viewpoint and departure. You will hike 9–25 km per day. Highlights include Grey Glacier, John Gardner Pass with views of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, the French Valley, and the iconic Torres Glacier. This is a self-guided trek: you follow marked trails and GPS tracks, with checkpoints and services at refuges.

Essentials: pre-broken-in waterproof trekking boots, 40–60 L backpack, layering system (technical base layer, fleece, waterproof/breathable jacket), hiking pants, gloves, hat, windbreaker, headlamp, first-aid kit, sunscreen, sunglasses, dry bag, and trekking poles. If camping: 4-season tent or one suitable for Patagonian winds, -5/0 °C sleeping bag (comfortable), sleeping mat. You can book full board at mountain huts or bring freeze-dried rations/energy snacks. Water is usually obtained from streams and sources near campsites; using a filter or water purification tablets is recommended. Bring a 2–3 L hydration pack/bottle. Minimize weight and maintain calorie balance.
