Tour Description
We will embark on our journey early, departing from our hotel to start today's adventure. We will travel approximately 52 kilometers south to reach the Strait of Magellan National Park, home to Fuerte Bulnes, constructed in 1843 under the leadership of Manuel Bulnes. This fort marked the first Chilean settlement in the region and was instrumental in the establishment of Punta Arenas.
The journey takes us along the legendary Strait of Magellan, where a diverse array of seabirds can be observed, including oystercatchers, wild geese, various duck species, and the renowned Patagonian cormorants. With a bit of luck, we might also spot dolphins and sea lions.
Upon arriving at the Park, perched at its highest elevation, we will encounter the Museum, featuring a state-of-the-art multimedia exhibition. This exhibit, through the fusion of art and science, provides insights into land formation processes, local lifestyles, and the history of human habitation in this part of the world. A spacious terrace offers breathtaking views of the Strait and the historic Puerto del Hambre monument.
Fort Bulnes, after years of abandonment, was reconstructed between 1941 and 1943. It has since become a staple destination for visitors to the Strait of Magellan. Originally founded in 1843, it was the first Chilean settlement in the area, paving the way for the establishment of Punta Arenas five years later. Today, it stands as a National Historic Monument.
Within this Park, we will also explore the Wind Forest Trail. This trail begins at the O'Higgins Lighthouse (situated behind Fort Bulnes) and traverses a Magellanic Coihue forest, uniquely shaped by the persistent wind. The trail culminates at the Strait Viewpoint, offering vistas of passing ships, birds, dolphins, and even whales.
Another trail to discover in the Park is the Coastal Trail. This path winds through the forests and rocks surrounding the Fort, leading to three strategically placed viewpoints that provide unparalleled panoramas of the surrounding landscape.
Our final stop will be at Puerto del Hambre, also known as King Felipe City, founded in 1584 by Pedro Sarmiento de Gamboa on behalf of the Spanish crown to assert control and colonize the Strait of Magellan.
This visit to Fort Bulnes is a remarkable opportunity to delve into the history and significance of this site in the exploration and colonization of southern Chile. It also allows us to relish the stunning coastal views and appreciate the rich cultural heritage of the Magallanes region and Chilean Antarctica.
