Tour Description

This half-day outdoor adventure is perfect for those new to trekking, as it offers an easy route while allowing us to explore the Magallanes National Reserve. This protected forested area features a variety of trails suitable for both trekking and mountain biking.
The reserve is conveniently located just 8 kilometers west of Punta Arenas and spans an impressive 20,878 hectares. Within its boundaries lies the Río De las Minas, which is historically significant as the site where coal was first discovered. This discovery prompted Governor José de los Santos Mardones to relocate the colony from Fuerte Bulnes to the area of Sandy Point, now known as Punta Arenas, in 1848.
The excursion begins by passing through several neighborhoods south of the city, eventually leading us to a paved road that takes us to the reserve. Upon arrival, we will travel approximately 4 km surrounded by the Patagonian forest to reach the trailhead, where we will embark on a walk lasting about thirty minutes.
Throughout the walk, we will encounter various species of endemic flora, including rosemary, sarsaparilla, devil's strawberry, calafate, murtilla, notro, leñadura, michay, and forests of coigüe and lenga. The area is also home to numerous bird species, with potential sightings of chunchos, rayaditos, chercanes, cachañas, chincoles, cometocinos, thrushes, and tiuques.
From the trail, we will enjoy a panoramic view of the De las Minas River Valley as it winds its way to the Strait of Magellan. After concluding this experience in the afternoon, we will retrace our steps back to Punta Arenas.
