Descripción del Tour:
Today, we set off on an intriguing expedition to uncover the remnants of history within the world's most arid desert heart, delving into the origins of the rich Atacameño culture.
Our Archaeological Tour in San Pedro de Atacama offers an exhilarating journey through the ancient civilizations that once thrived in this mysterious region.
Our adventure begins with a visit to the "Pukará de Quitor". This pre-Incan fortress, spanning 2.5 hectares, is situated 2,440 meters above sea level, just 3 kilometers from San Pedro de Atacama. Nestled on the hillside, it boasts a strategic location. Constructed from stone and adobe, these structures reflect the sophisticated social organization of the Atacameños' ancestors against the Spanish invaders, dating back to the 12th century. Today, it is recognized as a National Monument.
We will have the opportunity to explore this historical site before proceeding to the Tulor Village, which is over 2,800 years old. Archaeology plays a crucial role in understanding the ancient dimensions of this Atacama oasis, inhabited by humans since its earliest days.
In 1958, Father Gustavo Le Paige uncovered the initial remnants of the Village of Tulor, located 6 kilometers south of San Pedro de Atacama. This exceptional tour is often guided by locals, who will transport us to the beginnings and first inhabitants of San Pedro de Atacama. Tulor is a village established directly on the clay soil within the drainage area of the San Pedro River, eventually buried by the encroaching desert.
The village is distinguished by its remarkable architecture featuring circular adobe houses, harmoniously blending with the surrounding desert landscape. As you wander through its streets and plazas, you'll experience the past come to life, immersing yourself in a culture that coexisted with nature and thrived on its resourcefulness in one of the world's most challenging environments.
Before concluding our historical journey, we will visit the San Pedro "Father Gustavo Le Paige" Archaeological Museum in San Pedro. Named after a Jesuit priest who devoted nearly his entire life to searching, collecting, and studying the region's archaeological artifacts and the town of Licanantay.
Following this remarkable cultural and historical experience, we will return to San Pedro to reflect on all we have discovered today.
We look forward to welcoming you—don't miss out!
