Today, we embark on our journey as we depart from the hotel to explore a route that will deepen our understanding of the cultural, agricultural, and religious heritage of Chiloé. Our path will take us through the towns of Dalcahue, Curaco de Vélez, and Achao, where we will visit World Heritage churches, explore quaint yet intriguing museums, savor typical gastronomy, and experience the Dalcahue craft fair, renowned for its 100% Chilote products and considered one of the most significant in the archipelago.
Venturing along secondary roads, we will uncover why the FAO has recognized Chiloé as an Ingenious World Agricultural Heritage Site (GIAHS), thanks to the generations of farmers who have developed innovative practices for utilizing and conserving natural resources. One notable example is the cultivation of over 200 varieties of native potatoes.
In Dalcahue, we will explore the town, including its traditional craft fair and its Church, which was declared a World Heritage Site in 2000.
Subsequently, we will cross to Quinchao Island via a ferry. Our journey will take us through Huyar and Curaco de Vélez, where we will delve into the area's history, rural towns, architecture, religiosity, and folklore.
We will proceed to Achao, a charming town nestled among hills and situated in front of a shallow beach. This town is a popular destination for residents of the smaller islands, as it serves as the main town outside the Big Island.
Here, we will admire the unique architecture, characterized by houses adorned with shingles in various forms. We will also visit the Santa María de Loreto de Achao Church, recognized as a World Heritage Site. It stands as the oldest church in Chiloé.
Our journey continues to Villa Quinchao, where we will encounter the largest of the traditional Chilote churches before reaching the island's end at the Chequian sector.
Throughout the tour, we will enjoy the opportunity to share a delicious, typical lunch with a local family.
Finally, depending on the season, we will pause at one of the viewpoints along the route to observe resident birds, such as black-necked swans and various species of cormorants, along with some migratory birds, including the notable straight-billed curlew (from November to March) and the captivating Chilean Flamingo (from May to August).
This is a beautiful cultural experience that immerses us in local traditions and life.
